The future of humanity and our planet is closely linked to the abilities and aspirations of our young people. It is critical to ensure they have the skills necessary to meet today's challenges and shape a more peaceful and prosperous future. This belief amplifies the significance of World Youth Skills Day, celebrated on July 15 every year. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, this day highlights the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship, as well as for addressing global challenges and promoting sustainable development.
Furthermore, UZA recognises the significant roles that young people have played in determining Zimbabwe's future. The youth's energy, inventiveness, and fortitude stand out as vital resources in the continuous battle for social cohesiveness, economic revival, and political stability. The day also serves as a reminder of the vital role that equipped youth can play in promoting positive change and creating a better, more stable future for all, as Zimbabwe forges ahead on its path to recovery and development.
Globally, young people are at the forefront of innovation and social change. They play a vital role in promoting peace, economic development and social justice. Given rapid technological changes, evolving labour markets and the pressing challenges of climate change and social inequality, the need for comprehensive skills development is more urgent than ever.
The youth population in Africa is growing rapidly. In 2021, nearly 60% of Africa's population is under 25 years old, making it the youngest continent in the world. This demographics represent a significant opportunity for economic growth and social development, provided the right investments in education and skills development are made. However, challenges persist. According to the African Development Bank, youth unemployment in Africa stands at 11.6%, with millions more underemployed or working in the informal sector.
African youth are increasingly seen as the driving force behind economic innovation and social transformation. Countries across the continent are implementing various initiatives to harness the potential of their young populations. For example, the African Union's Agenda 2063 places great emphasis on youth empowerment and skill development as critical components for Africa's future development.
The role of our youth in Zimbabwe in restoring political, social and economic stability cannot be emphasised enough. The future of the country depends on the empowerment and skill development of its young population. Zimbabwean youth play a pivotal role in promoting political reform, social cohesion and economic revitalisation. They are the torchbearers of hope and progress in a nation striving for better governance and prosperity.
The United Zimbabwe Alliance (UZA) recognises the immense potential of our young people. UZA equips youth with the necessary skills to progress and revitalise Zimbabwe's industrial capacity. Through targeted training programs, mentorship initiatives and entrepreneurial support, UZA aims to empower young Zimbabweans to pave the path to a better life for every citizen.
On this World Youth Skills Day, we reaffirm our commitment to investing in the skills of our youth. In doing so, we are paving the way for a more peaceful, prosperous and sustainable Zimbabwe, Africa and the world. United, we will harness the energy and creativity of our young people to build a better tomorrow for all.
