International Day of Parliamentarism

On this day, we come together to recognize and celebrate the pivotal role that parliaments play in shaping our societies and fostering democratic governance. It serves as a reminder of the importance of parliamentary institutions in representing the voices of the people, ensuring accountability, and upholding the rule of law.

In the context of Zimbabwe, the significance of a robust and independent parliament cannot be overstated. Parliaments are the cornerstone of democracy. They are the forums where diverse opinions are heard, debated, and transformed into laws that guide our nation. By providing a platform for open discussion and decision-making, parliaments help to address the needs and aspirations of citizens, protect human rights, and promote sustainable development.

However, the role of the Zimbabwean Parliament has often been undermined by the prevailing political regime, which hampers its ability to function effectively and independently. This has led to weakened democratic processes, a lack of accountability, and diminished transparency in governance. The executive arm of government tends to overshadow the Parliament, which is evidenced by the recurring corrupt activities and other malpractices surfacing in government. As a result, Parliament has lost its ability to address these issues effectively, being subjected to the overwhelming dominance of the executive.

This day highlights the urgent need for continuous improvement in parliamentary functions in Zimbabwe. It is a call to strengthen parliamentary institutions, enhance transparency, and promote inclusivity. There is a necessity for effective reforms within the arms of the State and aligning various aspects of government with the Constitution of Zimbabwe to ensure balanced checks and give Parliament the required leverage to execute its mandate. Effective parliaments are characterized by their ability to respond to the challenges of the modern world, including those posed by technological advancements, social changes, and global crises.

As we commemorate this day, we pay tribute to the dedication of parliamentarians who strive to serve their constituents and uphold democratic principles, often in challenging circumstances. We also acknowledge the importance of civil society and the media in supporting and holding parliaments accountable. Their roles are crucial in ensuring that parliamentary work flourishes and that the voices of the people are heard and acted upon.

The United Zimbabwe Alliance calls upon all political players in Zimbabwe to allow parliamentary work to flourish. We urge the regime to respect the independence of the Parliament and to ensure that it can operate without undue interference. A strong, transparent, and inclusive Parliament is essential for achieving peace, justice, and sustainable development for all Zimbabweans.

Let us reaffirm our commitment to democratic governance and the vital role of parliaments in building a better future for Zimbabwe. We must strive to create more responsive, transparent, and inclusive parliamentary institutions that truly reflect the will and aspirations of the people they represent. By doing so, we can pave the way for sustainable development and a brighter future for all.
