The executive arm of government tends to overshadow the Parliament, which is evidenced by the recurring corrupt activities and other malpractices surfacing in government. As a result, Parliament has lost its ability to address these issues effectively, being subjected to the overwhelming dominance of the executive.
This day highlights the urgent need for continuous improvement in parliamentary functions in Zimbabwe. It is a call to strengthen parliamentary institutions, enhance transparency, and promote inclusivity. There is a necessity for effective reforms within the arms of the State and aligning various aspects of government with the Constitution of Zimbabwe to ensure balanced checks and give Parliament the required leverage to execute its mandate. Effective parliaments are characterized by their ability to respond to the challenges of the modern world, including those posed by technological advancements, social changes, and global crises.
As we commemorate this day, we pay tribute to the dedication of parliamentarians who strive to serve their constituents and uphold democratic principles, often in challenging circumstances.
