The lack of employment opportunities, exacerbated by high levels of poverty and despair, leaves many young individuals vulnerable to substance abuse as a coping mechanism. Furthermore, the accessibility of drugs and alcohol is facilitated by unscrupulous individuals, including certain politicians and influential figures, who exploit the vulnerability of young people for their own benefit. This exploitation perpetuates a cycle of substance abuse and undermines the well-being of our youth.
The economic challenges facing Zimbabwean youth increase their vulnerability to substance abuse. A significant proportion of employed youth are relegated to the informal sector, where they endure precarious working conditions and a lack of job security. Despite their high levels of education and literacy, many young people struggle to secure formal employment due to a mismatch between the skills demanded by the labour market and those possessed by young people.
In the political sphere, youth are often marginalized and excluded from meaningful participation and decision-making processes. The dominance of gerontocracy in political structures sidelines the voices and concerns of young people, relegating them to tokenistic roles devoid of real power. This exclusion perpetuates a sense of disillusionment among the youth and undermines their confidence in the political system.
